MOTS-c is a naturally occurring mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S ribosomal RNA gene of mitochondrial DNA. Unlike nuclear-encoded peptides, MOTS-c is produced directly by mitochondria and acts as a retrograde signalling molecule — travelling from mitochondria to the nucleus to regulate metabolic gene expression.
